'SLAB CITY' DOCUMENTARY CAPTURES SPIRIT OF LOCALS' LIFESTYLE

The subject of much national media attention in recent years, Slab City continued to draw an audience’s attention on Saturday, albeit this time a more local one. As part of the second day of the Imperial Valley Film Festival, an hour-long documentary titled “Slab City: A Wild Life in the Desert” was screened at the Cinemark Theaters in the Imperial Valley Mall.

About 50 people were in attendance for the first of the film festival’s daylong film screenings, including Slab City’s Neill family, which figured prominently in the film.

MUSICIANS JAM OUT AT OLD TIME FIDDLER'S EVENT IN IMPERIAL

Toes tapped, heads bobbed and music filled the air Sunday at Pioneers’ Museum during the first jam session of the season for the California State Old Time Fiddler’s Association.

The jam sessions will be held at the museum between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. every first and third Sunday until the season ends in late spring. All acoustic instrument players are welcome to come play, and the public is welcome to attend the free events.

ATTRACTIONS

A good way to gain insight into the Imperial Valley is in Imperial itself at the Pioneers Museum and Cultural Center of the Imperial Valley. This well-curated museum contains archives of the past, such as photos, letters, furniture and clothing. There’s also a display of farm implements on the grounds outside the 3,000 square foot museum.
